Pretoria Centre
This walk takes you through the historic centre of the city. Start from Church Square. A bronze statue of Paul Kruger is appropriately the focal point of this square, the heart of old Pretoria. Take a look at the impressive façades of the buildings around the square: the Old Raadsaal (council chamber) where Kruger's government met; Sir Herbert Baker's Reserve Bank building; and the old Palace of Justice. Walk west along Church Street for five blocks to Heroes' Acre, and then return to Church Square. Halfway along you pass the Paul Kruger House Museum. In Heroes' Acre are the graves of Andries Pretorius (after whom Pretoria is named), Paul Kruger and Hendrik Verwoerd, and also, oddly, that of the Australian 'Breaker' Morant, executed by the British in 1902 for allegedly murdering a Boer prisoner and a missionary. From Church Square walk east. You will come first to J G Strijdom Square, then to the State Theatre and Opera House. Opposite the theatre is Sammy Marks Square. Sammy Marks Square commemorates the eccentric, illiterate Randlord of the same name. Turn right from Church Street into Prinsloo Street. Walk south for six blocks, then turn right into Jacob Mare Street and continue two blocks to Paul Kruger Street. After passing Melrose House on your left, look left down Paul Kruger Street and you will see the Italian renaissance-style façade of Sir Herbert Baker's railway station. With the railway station behind you, walk north up Paul Kruger Street back to Church Square.
